Families across the UK could enjoy cheaper days out this summer following a temporary VAT reduction. The government will reduce VAT from 20% to 5% on selected family activities and children’s meals between 1 July 2026 and 31 August 2026.

This announcement forms part of the government’s new “Great British Summer Savings” campaign.

What the Summer VAT Reduction Applies To

The temporary 5% VAT rate will apply to the following family-focused activities and services:

  • Children’s menu meals eaten inside restaurants and cafés
  • Family and children’s cinema tickets
  • Theatre and exhibition tickets for families
  • Entry tickets for theme parks and amusement parks
  • Zoo and museum admission tickets
  • Soft play centres and adventure parks
  • Wildlife parks and nature reserves

As a result, many families could enjoy lower costs during the school summer holidays. However, business will decide whether they pass the full saving on to customers.

A Push to Support Families

The government introduced the summer VAT reduction as part of wider support measures linked to rising living costs. Therefore, the government hopes the scheme will help families enjoy affordable activities during the summer.

Rachel Reeves described the VAT reduction as a “positive step” to help families £enjoy a great British break this summer”.

Alongside the VAT changes, the government also announced:

  • Free bus travel in England for children aged 5 to 15 during August
  • Lower import charges on selected food products
  • An extension of the 5p fuel duty cut until the end of the year

Together, these measures aim to reduce some day-to-day costs for households.
