Tax season can be one of the most stressful times for sole traders. With so many obligations and deadlines to manage, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. A common concern is whether HMRC has processed your tax return.

However, by using HMRC’s online services, the HMRC app or calling them directly, you can easily track your return’s progress and avoid unnecessary worry.

How Long Does HMRC Take to Process a Tax Return?

Once you submit your Self Assessment tax return, you might wonder how long it will take for HMRC to process it. The processing times can vary depending on whether you submitted your return online or on paper.

  • Online Submissions: HMRC generally acknowledges online returns within 72 hours. However, full processing can take up to 2 weeks, particularly during busy times, such as right after the 31st January deadline.
  • Paper Submissions: Paper tax returns take much longer to process. HMRC typically takes around 8 to 10 weeks to complete these, but this time can extend during peak periods.

You should keep these timeframes in mind, especially if your return is complex or requires additional information.

How to Check if HMRC has Processed Your Tax Return

Knowing how to check the status of your tax return can avoid unnecessary stress. Thankfully, HMRC offers several ways to check your return’s progress.

1. Check Online Through GOV.UK

The quickest way to check your tax return status is through HMRC’s online services.

  • Step 1: Visit GOV.UK and log in using your Government Gateway credentials. If you haven’t registered yet, you’ll need to create an account.
  • Step 2: Once logged in, navigate to the “Self Assessment” section.
  • Step 3: Here, you can view the status of your return, including whether HMRC has received it or needs any additional information.

2. Use the HMRC App

HMRC also offers a mobile app, which allows you to check the status of your return from your smartphone.

  • Step 1: Download the HMRC app from your app store (available for both Android and iOS devices).
  • Step 2: Log in using your Government Gateway details.
  • Step 3: Head to the Self Assessment section to view your tax return status.

3. Contact HMRC Directly

If you prefer to speak to someone or haven’t found the answers online, you can call HMRC directly.

  • Step 1: Before called, make sure you have your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) and other personal details at hand.
  • Step 2: Call HMRC’s Self Assessment helpline, but expect longer waiting times during peak season. Try to call during quieter times if possible.

What Happens After HMRC Processes Your Return

Depending on whether you owe tax or are due a refund, your next steps will vary.

  • If You’re Due a Refund: HMRC will notify you via email or post when they process your refund. This notification will include the refund amount and how long it will take to reach your bank account. Make sure your bank details are up to date with HMRC to avoid any delays
  • If You Owe Tax: HMRC will inform you of how much you owe and the payment due date. You can pay via bank transfer, debit card or set up a Direct Debit. You can choose the option that suits you best and you must ensure you make your payment on time.
